Detail of a row of houses designed by Victorian architect Willis Hale on North 17th Street in Philadelphia. This wonderfully ornate end-of-the-row example has been demolished. It stood neglected and empty for too long (if you peek through that open window you can see the hole in the roof).

WOW that is a great photo the color and texture holds your attention. I wonder who lived there many years ago.
Thanks for visiting! It is fun to wonder about the stories of the lives connected with these places, isn’t it?
And stay tuned. Though I don’t have it for this house, I have photographs of a Hale-designed building on the same block and a wonderful fire insurance survey detailing the building’s construction and details. And as soon as I get it organized, I’ll publish my portfolio of photographs from this stretch of buildings so you can see the wonderful rhythm of his composition. They are some of my favorite in Philadelphia (and considering the vast array of remarkable buildings, that’s really saying something!).
